The Alan Inglis Memorial Essay Prize

Alan was a much-loved friend and colleague at 4PB. He occupied a unique position as a dual qualified lawyer: as a barrister in England and Wales and as an advocate in Scotland.  He had a thriving practice in both jurisdictions.

For his friends, family and colleagues, his untimely death in August 2023 was a moment of great shock and sadness.

Throughout his life, Alan was a fierce defender of LGBTQ+ rights, as well as being passionate about advancing freedoms for LGBTQ+ people and promoting equality and inclusion.

The Alan Inglis Memorial Essay Prize is an opportunity to honour and remember Alan’s contributions to the LGBTQ+ community. The competition will open at the start of April, and the essay question will be about legal issues that impact the LGBTQ+ community. The competition will be open to all law students (either at university, on a conversion course or at bar school) and those who have completed their studies and are actively seeking pupillage. Top entries will be invited to 4PB during Pride month (June) for a reception, where the winner will be announced.

The title for this year’s essay is:

‘Should the law allow children to have more than two legal parents?”

Answer in no more than 1,000 words (excluding citing sources and references).
