The 1996 Hague Convention on Jurisdiction, Applicable Law, Recognition, Enforcement and Co-operation in respect of Parental Responsibility and Measures for the Protection of Children is currently expected to be implemented on 1st August 2012. Whilst it had been expected that its implementation would coincide with the implementation of the Family Procedure Rules 2010, the practicalities of ratification and implementation of such a broad and significant convention has resulted in a number of delays The 1996 Convention has now entered into force in 33 countries, the most recent being Portugal, the Netherlands, Monaco, Malta, Austria and Denmark. Greece will follow in June 2012.
In anticipation of this significant development in the law relating to the international movement of children 4 Paper Buildings held a seminar to introduce practitioners to the operation of the Convention. The seminar, was presented by speakers with huge experience in the field from CAFCASS, the Bar and the solicitors profession will cover the legal and practical aspects of the operation of the Convention. Lord Justice Thorpe, who has been instrumental in promoting the Convention and pursuing its implementation opened the Seminar.
